Animal Planet - Cats 101: Egyptian Mau Segment Exciting News!! 80% of the cats featured in the 13 December 2008 Segment were Ra's Abi's Maus!! Anya runs agility, Future takes a bath, and OG becomes a skeleton! The segment is being aired at various times by Animal Planet. INTRODUCTION The exotic good looks of the Egyptian Mau take us back through the ages to the jungle and then beyond to the pharaohs who worshipped and domesticated these intelligent hunting cats. We think of the maus as God's leopards thus the name of our cattery Ra's (Egyptian for God's) Abi (Egyptian for leopard), founded in 1998. CATTERY INFORMATION We are a small cattery, located in New England north of Boston, specializing in silver and smoke Egyptian Maus. The health, temperament and quality of our breeding cats and the health, temperament and quality of the kittens they produce are of the greatest importance so we do not mass produce, but rather limit litters to one per year for each queen.
We carefully screen every new owner and work with him or her on delivery arrangements and have not had to ship. Because the demand for this rare breed far exceeds the supply, we encourage those interested in acquiring a mau to consider being placed on our reservation list. With several thousand maus in the world today, we are devoted and committed to this rare exotic spotted breed to ensure that it continues to thrive. Our successful breeding program is a result of our genetic knowledge and careful, sound mating selections to ensure healthy, viable offspring with sweet temperments, exquisite spotty coats, and breathtaking beauty. We have committed our time, hard work, and resources to breeding, actively showing and competing, learning from, and educating others to ensure that this breed does not become extinct. Our mau travels have covered many miles and two countries so far! ASSOCIATIONS We are proud to affiliate with and support the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA), the largest registry of pedigreed cats in the world. We compete primarily in CFA shows and belong to the following CFA associations: 1) Egyptian Mau Breed Council; 2) two CFA chartered breed clubs - GEMS (Global Egyptian Mau Society, aka 'Greened Eyed Monsters') and EMBFC (Egyptian Mau Breeders and Fanciers Club); and 3) two CFA chartered cat clubs - NHFF (New Hampshire Feline Fanciers) and Seacoast Cat Club, both of New Hampshire. Both of us are active club members and work at hosting three shows each year for our two local clubs to ensure that purebred cats can continue to compete and be seen by the public. In addition to being members of these associations, both of us hold or have held various club and officer positions. In the show scene both have worked in almost every position from show managers on. Bob is a CFA licensed ring clerk and master clerk in training. Carol is a clerk in training. Ring clerks help the judge run the show ring while the master clerk enters and verifies the correctness of all the rankings and awards. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Carol grew up with domestic shorthair cats. She also had a wonderful pet Siamese and a sweet Havana Brown as companions for over 28 years. Bob was a bird (parrot) breeder for 15 years and lectured on cockatiel and ringneck genetics to local clubs and schools, but lost his heart as a spectator to an Egyptian Mau at his very first cat show!
At the 2003 International Cat Show we showed our silver kitten, Ra's Abi's Nepra, who not only wowed us, but apparently the judges too. Nepra was the only mau kitten to final (out of over 200 shorthair kittens) and was the highest scoring Egyptian Mau kitten in show!! Nepra's success continued as an adult - finishing as the third National Best of Breed and a Regional Win. His story can be found on the show stars page. At the 2004 International Cat Show, Future finally had her chance to shine. She had missed this show 5 years earlier. However, now as a grandma, she showed the younger competition what they had missed! She made a final and shared the title of Best Egyptian Mau in Premiership. We continue to show these wonderful cats to get objective feedback from CFA judges regarding our breeding program and to give the public the chance to see these extraordinary cats. Please visit the Show Stars page to learn more about the current cats you may see with us at shows. We look foward to meeting you there! Contact us.
